Invited to Perform at American Choral Directors Association ConventionPress ReleaseThe locally renowned choral ensemble, Guelph Youth Singers, was selected to perform at the prestigious American Choral Directors Association's national conference to be held in Chicago, Illinois. 268 choirs from across North America auditioned for the honour of performing at this celebrated event taking place in February, 1999. Guelph Youth Singers will perform alongside the similarly selected 28 choirs as well as many outstanding professional choirs from around the world. "It is an honour for our young people to sing at such a premier event," says Linda Beaupré, the choir's conductor. Ms. Beaupré believes that the musical experience the choir will be exposed to will promote the young singers' appreciation for the music they produce and inspire their confidence in their own ability. "They will be performing for and alongside some of the top choirs in the world," explains Ms. Beaupré. The American Choral Directors Association meets nationally every two years and this season is expecting 5,000 delegates to attend. Guelph Youth Singers will perform two concerts during the event, for audiences of up to 2,500. Alan Viau, president of the board of Guelph Youth Singers, adds, "The talent and professionalism that these youth show will be a proud representation for the City of Guelph." This invitation acknowledges Guelph Youth Singers as one of Canada's best choirs, deserving of a position on an international stage. Over the past two years Guelph Youth Singers performed with choirs from Japan and Slovenia, and released its first solo recording, Bird In The Nest. "We are now looking to the community for financial support," says Mr. Viau. "The depreciating Canadian dollar is straining our ability to meet our budget for this trip." Mr. Viau would like to appeal to the community for sponsorship of the Choir, to ensure its position as ambassadors of Guelph at this celebrated conference. Anyone interested in sponsorship can contact Guelph Youth Singers at (519) 821-8574. Guelph Youth Singers was founded in 1991 to provide children and youth with the opportunity to experience a professional level of musicianship. The Choir performs up to five major concerts a year as well as workshops, festivals, corporate, community and guest performances. Guelph Youth Singers is comprised of three choirs which total 100 young singers aged eight through university age. Forty of those singers between the ages of ten through eighteen will travel to Chicago. |
