For immediate release: September 13, 2010 Guelph Youth Singers presents a 20th Anniversary ConcertOf Icebergs and Angels’ WingsGuelph Youth Singers will celebrate its 20th anniversary and the 100th birthday of Canadian artist, Doris McCarthy, in a concert titled Of Icebergs and Angels’ Wings, at Guelph’s River Run Centre. GYS, along with guests, the Guelph Chamber Choir, will enchant audiences with a uniquely Canadian programme which combines music with projected images of McCarthy`s art from the west coast and prairie provinces, through the Arctic, to Georgian Bay and through Quebec to the maritimes. A work written especially for this concert by Guelph-based composer, Barrie Cabena, will evoke the mystique of the icebergs of the Arctic. Guest speakers from the art world will give the audience a sense Ms. McCarthy’s extraordinary personality through their own experiences and friendship with this remarkable person. Doris McCarthy is one of Canada’s longest-producing artists. In the 1920’s she studied at the Ontario College of Art, when the faculty included two members of the Group of Seven—and in 1999 she was named the first Artist of Honour at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. She has painted every province and territory in our vast country, her paintings capturing the varied beauty of Canadian landscapes. Founded in 1991, Guelph Youth Singers has reached national prominence through provincial and national awards, most recently winning two first place awards in the 2009 National Music Festival and second place in 2010. Its two solo CDs are sold throughout North America and are regularly played on Canadian radio stations. GYS is planning the release of its third CD, Into the Breeze, on October 30th to celebrate its 20th anniversary. All four choirs of Guelph Youth Singers, with singers aged six through 18, will participate in this concert. The Guelph Chamber Choir is also well-known throughout Canada, with Guelph Chamber Choir having been recognized through a number of broadcasts on national radio and prizes in the CBC National Competition for Amateur Choirs. GYS has enjoyed an association with Guelph Chamber Choir throughout its history, with GCC fostering GYS through several guest appearances and a joint concert presentation. The two choral organizations will combine their strengths to present songs by Canadian composers Connie Kaldor, James Gordon, Jeff Smallman, Mark Sirett, Willi Zwozdesky, R. Murray Schafer, Donald Patriquin, Eleanor Daley, Stuart Calvert, Sheldon Rose, and John Beckwith. Outstanding arrangements of well-known folk songs from Newfoundland and Quebec will mix with native chants. GYS is always looking for new choristers who love to sing. Choristers enjoy the chance to learn to sing well, to learn to read music, to do drama workshops, travel and perform…and to build lifelong friendships with other talented youth. Auditions are now being scheduled for entry into the choir in January 2011.
